Phineas Andrew Lee !BACK IN SCHOOL THEY NEVER TAUGHT US what we needed to know, like how to deal WITH DESPAIR, OR SOMEONE BREAKING YOUR HEART.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The beach had to be Phin’s all time favorite places in the entire universe. There was just something about the combination of the sand and the water that really spoke to Phin. He just kind of felt like that was where he belonged. Or he could just be going crazy. Yeah, it was probably the latter. But Phin and the beach just came as a package deal. Wherever you found one, you were more than likely going to find the other not to far away. Even when Phin lived in Nevada he somehow found his way to a beach almost every weekend. No matter how much time he had to spend in the car, and no matter how much gas he had to use to get there, Phin would always be found at the beach. It was like some kind of life force for him. So when Containment has been one of the bands that were confined to the island, Phin honestly couldn’t have been more excited. He’d get to continue playing drums, he’d live close to the beach, and he’d just get to chill out every day. It was like every lazy pothead drummers dream. How could Phin ever possibly refuse or want to leave that kind of sweetness? This Kasabi ruler was a pretty alright guy in Phin’s book.
Needless to say, when Phineas had woken up that morning, the first thought to enter his head was that of the beach. Considering the temperature outside, going to the beach seemed like an unholy idea. But that only applied if you were anybody but Phineas Andrew Lee. Thoughts of the beach finally managed to motivate Phin into action, and he pulled his skinny blonde away from the warmth of his bed and began to dress himself for the day’s activities. The moment he got out of his bed, all intentions of swimming or surfing that day were struck from his brain. The air in his room was FREEZING. And that meant that it was entirely too chilly for him to be in water and really enjoy it. Being soaked and shivering made it entirely too hard to surf or swim. Both activities did involve a large amount of muscle control. He may have had a high tolerance for the cold, but when water was involved; his tolerance was cut in half at the very least. So instead of grabbing his usual wetsuit or board shorts, he pulled on a pair of pants and a sweater. By the end of the day one of them would probably end up ruined, but that would be a small price to pay for Phineas. Such matters were of no importance to him. After gathering his things and shoving a piece of toast in his mouth, Phin was out the door. Once he opened the door, the cold air that rushed in was like a smack in the face. But once the initial shock wore off, Phin actually started to like it a little bit. He didn’t take his skateboard that day, and instead decided to walk and just enjoy the cold day around him. Fortunately, the Containment house wasn’t too far from the beach. And that would always come in handy for Phineas. Honestly, the platinum blonde didn’t have much to do that day. He hadn’t really made plans with anybody and he couldn’t recall if Containment had a show that night or not. And that probably meant that they didn’t. Phineas didn’t often forget about shows, at least not anymore. After the last time when he had arrived fifteen minutes late and received verbal lashings from each of his band mates and some of the crew members, Phin had learned to actually pay a little bit of attention when their manager actually spoke to them. So Phin had a whole day at his disposal, and most of that would be spent at his favorite place ever.
Once he arrived at the beach, Phin approached the water, and stopped a couple of feet from it. He dropped down to the sound and lay back, with a grin on his face. The sand attached itself to parts of his sweater and pants and entangled in his hair. It pretty much goes without saying, that sand was probably the part about the beach that most people like the least. It was just uncomfortable and if it got into certain places it could actually be quite painful. But for some reason Phineas absolutely adored it. He loved the feeling of it in his hair and between his fingers and toes. And when the sand was wet and stuck to him, then it just made things ten times more awesome. His hands started grabbing up the sand and he made little piles with his hands. He heard the struggling footsteps of somebody walking in the sand but he ignored them and continued to play with the sand. It wasn’t until a voice rang through the air that Phin was brought from his sand-play. STEPHANIE CHATIERNo time for love that came her way She looked in the mirror and thought today What happened to Miss No-longer-afraid?
This had started as one of those days when Stephanie simply wanted to curl up in bed and stay there. It wasn't that the young woman was in a particularly bad mood, she hadn't slept horribly, and it certainly wasn't some post-traumatic depression randomly deciding to resurface. Neither was the weather all that bad. Sure, it was cold, but it wasn't raining, so it could have been worse. In fact, there was probably no rational explanation for why this was a bad day, but it was, and socializing was the last thing she wanted to do. On the other hand, staying in bed all day made her feel awfully lazy, so after not doing anything for a while, the brunette had decided to go down to the beach, since it was likely to be quite deserted when it was so cold outside. No one in their right mind would want to go swimming or whatever else people usually went to the beach for. In her mind, the only thing really useful about a beach was laying there in order to get a tan, but honestly, tanning beds did the job just as well. It would be the perfect spot for a solitary walk right now, though.
The island wasn't so bad. In fact, it was rather pretty, though she couldn’t imagine staying here permanently. Sooner or later, she’d have to get a proper education and stop living off the money granted to her by her family. The money in her bank account was technically enough to supply her for a lifetime, but it didn’t feel right, living off it the way she was after breaking ties with her home and family. As long as she stayed here, however, she could pretend to be on a vacation, just taking a momentary break from her ‘real’ life. It was easier than having to think about actually doing something meaningful with her life, because as much as she wanted to be completely independent, finding the motivation to do any real work was difficult. Perhaps it would have been odd to some people, claiming independence when she relied on money and resources she herself had done nothing to earn, but at least they were her own. She needed no one else to take care of her, and that was the important thing.
As she stepped into the sand, Stephanie’s thoughts were soon distracted by her instant regret of the decision to put on high heels. As lovely as her Jimmy Choos were, they were also largely impractical when it came to walking in cold, dry sand which the heels seemed to sink into, reluctant to let go of their grip on the grains of sand. “Merde,” she muttered under her breath, annoyed both with herself and the shoes. She kept walking along the beach, however, gazing out at the sea stretching out into the horizon. It was a beautiful sight, really, and one she ought to take more time to enjoy instead of dancing and drinking all night. Then again, dancing and drinking was fun, while staring at the sea just made her feel all smart and philosophical. Of course, she was both those things (somewhere deep beneath her makeup and fancy clothes), but she’d sooner die than let people know that. A thinker wasn’t who she really was, just someone who appeared once in a while, when the real Stephanie let her mask slip for a moment. That wasn’t often, though.
Stopping, she finally bent over to take off her shoes, deciding that dealing with being cold for a little while would be better than hardly being able to move. When she got back to the apartment, she’d be able to take a long, hot bath and forget about ever being cold, but if she managed to break a bone or two by tripping over a rock, the effects would be worse in the long run than simply feeling a bit cold. As she took a step forwards in order to loosen her other shoe, however, a wave crashed onto the sand, splashing ice cold water all over her dark jeans. Instinctively, she let out a small scream and practically jumped back, glowering at the sea as if daring it to attack her again. Looking around, she bit her lip as she noticed that she wasn’t alone on the beach after all, and whoever that was over there had probably heard her silly scream. Oh, great. Nothing made an already excellent day better than having some random stranger thinking she was scared of a few drops of water.
It didn’t even take a second for her to regain her composure, however, and her grey eyes fixed themselves on the person only a couple of meters away from her. There was something all too familiar about that guy, though she silently prayed she was wrong, and that it really was just some random stranger. It would be the first random stranger she would have seen looking quite that similar to Phineas, however –and as soon as the thought struck her, she wanted to turn around and walk away, pretending not to have noticed him at all. Too late, though. He appeared to have noticed her looking. Merde.

Phineas Andrew Lee !BACK IN SCHOOL THEY NEVER TAUGHT US what we needed to know, like how to deal WITH DESPAIR, OR SOMEONE BREAKING YOUR HEART.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -The feeling that Phineas felt at that moment was unmistakable. He was completely serene and finally content. There were some places and some things that could just do that to Phineas. His ADHD caused him to constantly be wound up and bouncing off of the walls, but not even his ‘disorder’ could negate the effects of these places. Not even his medication could get him this irreversible feeling of calm. It was times like this when he let his mind just wander and he allowed himself to answer all the problems of the world. According to Phineas, the big answer that people were looking for was that they needed to just calm down. Everybody was always looking forward to the next thing to happen in life, so much so that they forgot to stop and enjoy what was happening in the present. That was how he lived his life and he was perfectly happy with it. Then again he wasn’t really considered ‘successful’ in the eyes of society, especially his parents. Or at least he hadn’t been considered ‘successful’ until he had joined up with Containment. He had just been another unemployed and uneducated pothead. And he was willing to take that because at least he was happy. Most people didn’t share his same preoccupation with the beach. Sure, everybody loved the beach when it was nice and sunny and they could swim and play and be happy. But the minute it started raining or got a little cold, the beach didn’t hold the same power over people. But Phineas would always be there. Weather was a small thing to think about when it came to Phineas being with his one true love. Needless the say, when the small scream pierced the relative silence of the beach, Phineas was pulled from his own thoughts quite quickly. He automatically sat straight up from a both shock and nervousness. Typical Phineas to assume that he had done something wrong. It was kind of an automatic reaction considering most of the time he had done something wrong. But that was beside the point. He hadn’t been expecting anybody else to be there, especially considering the weather. He shook his hair a bit, releasing some of the grains of sand that had attached them to it and watching as they flew back to the ground. His blue eyes scanned the sandy area around him in search of the source of the scream. They fell on the source a few moments later, and Phineas chuckled a bit. So he wasn’t the source of the scream. That was quite a relief for him.
The form that stood a couple of feet from him looked oddly familiar. Phineas couldn’t help but stare a little longer in an attempt to figure out exactly who it was. It was Stephanie. Oh, this was perfect, just perfect. And When Phineas finally recognized who the form was, a whole conglomerate of feelings rushed over him. The first one up to the plate was excitement, because that was just Phin’s natural reaction to seeing anybody that he hadn’t seen in a while. Actually, excitement was just Phin’s reaction to everything nowadays. They could sit and talk and catch up and everything would be wonderful, because to Phin everything was wonderful. But then all the memories of what had happened popped back into his head and the only thing he was feeling was sadness. He had spent so long trying to figure out what it was that he had done wrong. Nine months to be exact. And nine months in a dark apartment, with little to no human contact could really mess a person up. Honestly, Phineas was surprised that he wasn’t in some kind of mental hospital by that point. He probably should have been. But that would have been giving in too easily, and that just wasn’t the kind of person that Phineas was.
And the last feeling to let itself be known to Phineas was an odd mixture of anger and just utter confusion. This was supposed to his place. Or at least he was going to make this his place. It was going to be his escape from her and his memories of her. He was finally going to be ‘safe’. But now she was here too? What was she doing here? And better yet, why was she here? At that point the most intelligent decision would have been for Phineas to just ignore her. To just stare at his purple fabric covered knees and act like he hadn’t seen or heard anything out of the ordinary. Or he could have stood up and just ran in the other direction forever. Or at least until he felt like his legs were about to give out and just try and forget about her. But those two options have been way too easy, and Phineas wouldn’t be putting himself through enough. So he chose the second option, the one that made him look like a crazy person. He scrambled to his feet, sand flying off his pants as he did and he stared straight at her. “Stephanie?!” His voice didn’t show his displeasure at her being there, but that pretty much would have been a given at that point. STEPHANIE CHATIERNo time for love that came her way She looked in the mirror and thought today What happened to Miss No-longer-afraid?
The chances of encountering the one person in the world Stephanie had never wanted to meet again seemed to ridiculously low to actually be real, but here he was, staring straight at her. This tiny island was the last place she would have expected to encounter an ex-boyfriend. The last time they spoke hadn't really been a good one - or rather, it had, which was part of the problem. If they'd been fighting or something of the sort, this accidental encounter would possibly have been less awkward, but as it happened, she had just walked away without explaining, only hours after agreeing to marry the guy. Not very classy, and certainly not very nice, but still exactly what she had done, somehow thinking she could avoid the past forever. The most painful part of it all, ironically, was that their relationship had been great and she had been happy with him, but in the end, she had still bailed. In her mind, it was justified and she knew exactly why she had done it, but she was also quite aware that those things probably weren’t as obvious to anyone who wasn’t her. Explaining wasn’t one of her talents, either. Hopefully, this meeting could be brief and as not-awkward as at all possible, so she wouldn’t have to explain anything.
From the moment Phineas opened his mouth to speak, she was expecting the worst – expecting him to sound hurt or angry, or just tell her to go away so he wouldn’t have to see her again. That was certainly what she would have done, had she been in his position. Surprisingly, however, that was not the vibe she was getting as she heard him speak, and as if she had been caught completely off guard, her expression changed into one of surprise. There was no hint of displeasure in his tone, which seemed strange. In fact, for a moment, the unexpected reaction had her wondering if he even remembered the way she had left him anymore, which was the only explanation she could think of for not showing immediate signs of utter loathing. Not being the type to look shocked for too long– or really, express any emotions she didn’t find a reason for people to see -, her arched eyebrows soon lowered, and a faint smile appeared across her red lips. With any luck, this conversation would consist of hi and bye, and she’d be on her way again. That would probably be the best of both of them.
”Phineas,” she replied, regretting having answered almost instantaneously. Had she thought that through at all, she realized, it would have been a good idea to say nothing at all and just keep walking, pretending she hadn’t noticed him talking to her. It would’ve seemed completely unrealistic, though, since the guy had definitely noticed her noticing him, and it would’ve been a stretch to try to convince anyone that she hadn’t recognized him. They’d been together for three years, after all, and while she certainly didn’t remember details like the shade of his eyes or the exact shape of his nose, there was certainly no denying that the young man standing right in front of her right now was her former boyfriend. ”What are you doing here?” Her question sounded perfectly innocent, like she was asking out of sheer curiosity and nothing else, but beneath the calm words spoken in her slight French accent, there was a trace of disbelief and insecurity. Neither one of those things were going to show, though. If she wanted to bitch about it, she would go to a bar and get wasted later, but right now, she intended to keep her cool and act like nothing in the world could faze her. Those drama lessons she had taken when she was younger definitely helped.
It was hard to shake the feeling that this was really just a bad dream, and Stephanie found herself hoping to wake up in her bed every time she blinked. It wasn’t that seeing Phineas was such a nightmare – she was just being confronted with feelings of guilt she had suppressed shortly after their breakup, and wasn’t prepared to deal with that guilt. Most likely, she never would be. Coping with her own emotions, no matter how talented she was at disguising them, was not something she did very well, unless ‘dealing with them’ meant pushing them aside and hope they wouldn’t ever come up again. Most of the time, that worked surprisingly well, but on the other hand, she hadn’t really been thrust into a situation quite like this before. All she could do was make sure she kept smiling.

Phineas Andrew Lee !BACK IN SCHOOL THEY NEVER TAUGHT US what we needed to know, like how to deal WITH DESPAIR, OR SOMEONE BREAKING YOUR HEART.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Really? Like honestly? Were you being serious right now? Of all the places in the entire universe for them to be, Phineas and Stephanie just had to end up on the same island at the same time. If Phin could have any worse luck than this he’d probably be dead or in the hospital or something. Phin wasn’t really the person to dwell about past grievances. That had just never been a part of his personality and outlook on life. He was all about the now. To him, there was no past and there was no future. There was only the present and he had to enjoy it while he could. But there were certain things that no matter how obliviously friendly and no matter how ‘in the present’ you were, you just couldn’t forget or ignore. And what Stephanie had done to him was definitely one of those things. It wasn’t like Phin hated her or anything. He had let go of his hatred a long time ago. But just because he didn’t hate her didn’t mean that he particularly liked her, or was happy with her. Not like it would really matter to her or anything. Phin knew Stephanie, or at least knew a thing or two. And he knew that when she did things she did them on purpose. She was strong and that was what Phin had initially respected about her. And just look where that got him.
“It sounds weird but I’m actually kind of stuck here?” That did sound weird. The statement made it sound like Phineas was in prison or on death row or something, which he most definitely wasn’t. When in reality, it was quite the opposite. Up until a few moments ago Phin had been in absolute paradise. “You know that crazy Kasabi ruler man and his whole ‘lets trap all the bands on my island idea’; well Containment was included in that little plan of his.” To most it would have sounded like Phineas was a nervous mess. But that simply wasn’t the case. The skinny blonde kid was just rambling and that was just a signature thing that Phineas did. And it really wasn’t surprising either considering how energetic the boy was about everything. Energy usually equaled more words than was really necessary. And energy just happened to be something that Phineas seemed to have endless amounts of.
Okay, so maybe Phineas was just a tad bit nervous about talking to the girl who had abandoned him in the middle of the night after agreeing to marry him, but could you really blame him for it? There were so many unanswered questions; enough of them to drive even the sanest person crazy. The principle question being why she did it. Phineas couldn’t remember doing anything to warrant her leaving him like she did. He hadn’t smacked her around or called her a bitch. If you asked him, and well just about everybody else that knew about their relationship, he was a damn good boyfriend. Sure they had their fights. Every couple fought; it was just a natural thing. It was when a couple didn’t fight then something was usually wrong. But none of the fights they had ever had were worth breaking up over. And that just drove Phin absolutely out of his mind. What had he done wrong? Was he too clingy? Did he step to far ahead when he proposed? Did she secretly hate him and think he was a government spy or something? Phin just couldn’t make sense of any of it.
Phin flashed one of his big cheesy grins in her direction. The grin was forced, but any expression of joy at seeing Stephanie at the moment was going to be forced. He may not have been honest, but at least he was trying to be nice. “What about you?” Honestly, Phin was curious as to why she was here. But underneath, he was just praying that she wasn’t staying on the island for very long. He didn’t need a constant reminder of what they had been through, or at least what he had been through when she left him. He wouldn’t be in the right mind to perform knowing that Stephanie was somewhere on the island, and could possibly be in that very crowd. And as selfish as it sounded, Phin was willing to stick by it. But that was understandable. Nobody wanted to be reminded of their past heartbreaks. STEPHANIE CHATIERNo time for love that came her way She looked in the mirror and thought today What happened to Miss No-longer-afraid?
Stephanie brushed some hair out of her face, trying so hard not to stare in disbelief. Her desire had been to get away from all the stress, including all bad memories and things that reminded her of them - like Phineas. Her mind worked in mysterious ways when it came to things like this. Phineas hadn't ever hurt her or tried to be mean, but for some reason, her mind had still classified him as a 'bad memory' for the simple reason that she had probably given him some of those. Of all the negative qualities she possessed, lack of self-insight was not one of them, so she realized that this wasn't anyone's fault but her own and that she was the one who had done something unforgivable. Being angry with Phineas would be ridiculous, but she couldn't help it. Seeing him just reminded her of it all and was probably going to ruin any chance of enjoying the rest of her time here because she'd be terrified of seeing him everywhere she went. Why did he have to be here? It wasn’t fair.
The reason he was giving her would only have made her angrier, had she not heard rumors about some bands being trapped here from some crew member she had met the other day. It had seemed incredulous, but since the rumor was now being confirmed, it was probably true. This situation could’ve been the setup for the world’s worst romantic comedy, and it was getting worse by the minute. Here she was, on some stupid little island nobody had even heard of a little while ago, and so was her ex-boyfriend. Not only was he here, though, he was stuck here indefinitely because some stupid chief had decided to trap him. She couldn’t believe it, and she didn’t like it, though she had to admit there was actually a certain humor to it. If she had been completely masochistic and enjoyed being reminded of things that had hurt her, it would have been absolutely hilarious. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case, and like most people, she preferred moving on and never being reminded of bad times ever again.
”You’re right, that does sound odd,” she replied, though the smile she was putting on was supposed to make it seem like a joke. ”I guess it means he likes your music, though.” It was almost too easy talking casually to him, trying to pretend nothing had ever happened between them. She could probably have fooled herself – there was something about this guy that had always made her feel so comfortable, with his sense of humor and ability to make anyone smile. If she could’ve done it all over again, she would have been happy to stick with being his friend, as she had no trouble imagining that might have worked out better than their romance had. Friendships were never as intimidating as relationships, nor were they as demanding – the expectations were simply lower of a friend than a partner. It was far too late to contemplate that now, though, and they weren’t ever going to be friends. Even if they got past all the awkwardness, she knew their past would always be in the back of her mind and she’d never be completely comfortable. Even thinking about it was stupid.
”I’m just here on vacation,” she then added, realizing he had actually asked her a question. ”I’m… oui, vacation for another few weeks.” She had been about to mention the stress, how she wasn’t sleeping enough and had practically been ordered away by her doctor, but decided that Phineas probably couldn’t care less about her life at the moment. If she had been in his shoes right now, she definitely wouldn’t have wanted to hear every little problem she might be dealing with. Seriously, they had spoken enough for one lifetime, and everything that might have been left unsaid had been deemed unnecessary by the way she had walked away from him that night. Phineas Andrew Lee !BACK IN SCHOOL THEY NEVER TAUGHT US what we needed to know, like how to deal WITH DESPAIR, OR SOMEONE BREAKING YOUR HEART.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Phin wanted to do something to show how angry he was to her because he didn’t think she understood. But he would never think she understood the exact effect that her actions had had on him. He wanted to kick sand around and just yell in her face. He wanted to know why she had left him when there was virtually no reason to. He wanted to know if she had had this kind of tortuous break up with him in mind all along, or if it had just been a spur of the moment thing. He wanted to know if she ever woke up in the middle of the night and missed him. He wanted to know if she ever felt like she had made the wrong decision, and not even that. Did she even feel the tiniest bit remorseful about what she had done? Disregarding the future all together, did she feel bad about destroying his feelings like that? Like what she had done had really shaken him. Scratch that. What she had done had almost destroyed him. He had just completely shut down. During the nine month period after the break up Phin had barely touched his drum set. And his drum set had been his only release during his teen years. For a while he didn’t think he was going to be able to pull himself out of it. Fortunately he had managed to pull himself out of that dark apartment, but just barely.
Phin didn’t only want to do these things. He pretty much needed to. Let’s admit it; his mental state hadn’t exactly been the healthiest since their break-up. And honestly before the break up it hadn’t really been all that great either. Phin had never been crazy or psychopathic or anything. But he did have some severe ADHD, and he already felt like those who he was supposed to ‘love’ didn’t really care about him and Stephanie leaving had just agitated those things even more. He wasn’t going to be able to suffer another break up like that again, at least not without having some kind of break down. And that was definitely interfering with the relationships he had now, or better yet, lack of relationships. Phin was tired of being abandoned and he was sick of his feelings being everybody’s last priority. So he did a complete personality makeover. He was going to be the one that did the leaving from that point on. Nobody was going to get to him anymore. So far he had done a pretty good job of pushing people away romantically since then. But you could only push people away for so long. Astoria was slowly inching closer and closer to permanently making a home in his heart and it was scaring him half to death, and he was sleeping around more than he ever had before. But it still wasn’t working.
“I guess you’re right.” From what Phin had heard the man was just keeping them there for the money that they could bring in, which was just completely against Phin’s morals. Nothing should ever be done strictly for the money. Because when that happened, it showed off a dark and greedy side to people that Phin knew wasn’t there naturally. Money just corrupted people and was just plain evil in Phin’s opinion. But Phineas had never been one of those kids that wanted to ‘fight the power’. Because when you ‘fought the power’ what were you really fighting for? To put your people in charge usually. And then you would be the power, and what would you do if people tried to fight you off? The same thing that the last people had done. Call him lazy or a just another dumb kid, but that was what made sense in his mind. And what made sense to him was just something he was going to accept as true.
A vacation? It was kind of an odd place to vacation in Phin’s opinion. Not that Kasabi wasn’t beautiful or anything. Cause it was absolutely gorgeous. After this whole ‘being trapped’ thing was over and done with, Phin might actually stay here. It was just his kind of place. He was near the beach and away from his family. He could just spend all day lying around the beaching and playing his drum set and just be perfectly set with his life. For somebody with such complicated emotions, Phin was a relatively simple human being. He didn’t require much at all. And while Kasabi may have been gorgeous, it wasn’t like Paris or Milan or anything. “Well vacations are always nice. And are you enjoying said vacation?” No matter what she said, Phin knew that it would initially translate to ‘I had been having a good or a semi-good vacation until you just happened to show up.’ .
