when i lie to myself and say that it's okay
'cause if i don't, i think i'll go insane
but the truth is, i only have myself to blame .

- - - - dreams, for kill the lights to eventually be somewhat famous, to someday settle down.
- - - - fears, heights, needles, something breaking up the band, ending up anything like his father.
- - - - overall personality, You know how in about every third band or so, there is always one person who the fans look at and kind of think, “Why the hell are they in a band? They never talk.” or something along those lines? Well, Owen is probably the closest to that person in Kill the Lights. To fans, he seems very shy, usually only nodding or laughing in interviews, maybe the occasional “yeah” or “no”. But that’s about all they know about him. And that’s his exterior: a shy kid who kind of tags along with his band for the sole reason that he’s a drummer. Unless someone has met and actually talked to Owen, the chances are that’s the only thing that they know about him.
To Owen’s friends, there couldn’t be anything farther from the truth. Yes, Owen is quiet. That does not by any means say that he is shy, because, to be honest, he isn’t. He could go up and talk to any random person and not be too embarrassed about it; he simply chooses not to. There are many theories behind that, but, truthfully, it’s because he just doesn’t want to. He feels more comfortable around his friends and people who know him. No, he’s not stuck up, and no one who knows him can truthfully say that he is. If anyone asked his fellow band members they would probably say something about him either being a sweet guy, or a complete dork. Actually, it’d probably be both.
While Owen really is a nice, quiet person, he actually has a surprisingly rebellious side to him. It’s not the BAM-in-your-face rebellious attitude most rebels sport, but more of the silently refusing to do something if someone tells him he should. Along the lines of his defiant attitude, he is also quite a prankster. You’ve heard the phrase, “It’s always the quiet ones,” haven’t you? That fits Owen perfectly. If someone hadn’t known him very long, he could stick a kick me note on their back, sit down, and be completely overlooked when the person found it and started blaming people. Yes, he is a good actor, hence the reason he gets away with things like that. That being said, he’s probably not the best person to play poker with.
Owen does have a deeper side to him, even with his passive-aggressive rebelliousness. He’s the kind of person that makes a very good listener, since he can sit there for hours and listen to a person rant or bitch or cry to him and still be able to help them out. No, that’s not to say he doesn’t have flaws, of course, because he definitely has his share or more. Most people wouldn’t guess it, but he has a severe inferiority complex. He hides it well enough, doesn’t he? Along with that, his most hated flaw would probably be the worst. That being, alcohol. He hates the stuff with a passion, hell, his father’s an alcoholic, and he therefore avoids it like the plague. But when he gets a bit too depressed or nervous, guess what the first thing he does is. Right. After he’s sober again, he beats himself down mentally for it and withdraws from everyone for a few days, but it doesn’t seem to stop him at all once he’s upset again. Why did you think he hates his father so much?

eric andrew collins – father – 41 – accountant

- - - - overall history, Owen Michael Collins was born in a nice hospital in Portland, Oregon, to Tabitha and Eric Collins. The three of them lived easily enough at first, Eric was a good enough father and he and Tabitha had only been married about ten months. Of course, she didn’t know him as well as she should have, but that didn’t matter to her then. The new family lived in a nice enough house, Tabitha was a newly-graduated lawyer coming from a family with money, Eric was working whatever jobs he could until he finally started his accounting career. A few months into Owen’s life, Eric got mad. As in, very mad. Tabitha hadn’t really thought much of this trait of his before; she’d never seen one of his really mad streaks, so she was obviously scared when it happened. Eric was drunk, not usual at that point of the family’s history. He never physically harmed Tabitha or Owen, though Tabitha has hinted in the past to Owen that he did. Owen tends to take that as Eric actually hit Tabitha, as he was too young to remember for himself.
Tabitha, being the sweetheart that she was, maybe a bit too naïve, accepted his apology the next day, and told him it would be okay. Even though that happened a few more times in the next four years, she forgave him every time. Owen never really understood it then, he was only four, you know, but it scared him more than it seemed to scare his mother, and that fact also scared him. In spite of what problems would have seemed obvious to most people, she announced about four months after Owen turned four that she was pregnant again. Eric seemed happy enough, and he was. Lindsey Collins was born a few weeks after Owen turned five, and that was just a year or two before Eric had his next major alcoholic episode. Finally, Tabitha told him that she was leaving, along with their children. She was sick of Eric’s now nearly constant mood swings and his inability to keep a decent job, and she just left, eventually returning to her hometown in California. Eric also left Portland a few months later, he’s probably ended up somewhere in Washington, Owen’s not really sure. His mother never really told him.
When Owen was offered the chance to join Kill the Lights, he took it. Even though he was the new kid to the band, he loved it. It was probably the only thing that saved him more than his mother finally breaking up with that bastard who called himself Owen’s father. That’s about all he ever sees him as anymore. He hasn’t seen him since he was six, nor does he want to in the least. If anything, he wants to turn out completely different than his so-called father, and the band is definitely a good opportunity to help that in his eyes. That’s not the only reason, though. He really does love the band and music, despite what anyone says, and he’ll be the first person to tell someone that.
