Socializing wasn’t high on Katie-Lou’s list of priorities right now. It never had been, really. Yeah, she liked to be on top, being on stage, but that had nothing to do with the hundreds of pairs of eyes following her every move, that was to do with the atmosphere, the adrenalin. She liked to think of herself as a bit of an adrenaline junkie in that way. It’s true that it takes guts to perform on stage, any sort of performance, really, but the feeling of terror before the show, the nerves and the butterflies, mixed together with the brilliant surge of energy one gets when thrashing onstage with one’s guitar... That feeling was surely enough to make up for a lack of true friends, a lack of real fun in all other aspects of life… Surely? Katie frowned. Arms wrapped round her knees, body sunken cosily into a squishy red leather chair. She was being a bit sad, really. Shallow. To draw the conclusion that one is okay not having any friends? Yeah. Sad. The band, they were all friends, but nothing like the close friendships she saw on tv so many times a day. She couldn’t stay like this forever.
“I’m going out!” she called to whoever was listening. She checked her watch, 8:30am. Most likely nobody. Nobody was awake in the house at this time in the morning. Yeah, no reply. Katie grinned, shaking her head, unsure of why she was grinning as she jumped up from her chair, grabbing her handbag. She strolled towards the front door, checking her hair in the mirror. Her long dark curls hung over her shoulders. A glance towards the window told her that she was dressed appropriately. The sun blazed, making the air seem rippled on top of her car, though it was only early in the morning. She slid her phone into the pocket of her denim shorts, brushed down the floaty red, strapless top and put her sunglasses on. Yep. Ready. She nodded once and pulled open the door, skipping down the path and swinging the gate shut behind her with a clatter.
Her little red car was hot inside. She wound down the window, using the little grey handle. It was an old little car, but she loved it to bits. A short drive into town, then she parked up and slipped out onto the sidewalk. There weren’t many people at all. Locking the door behind her, she headed off down towards the coffee shop. The door opened with a little bell noise and she flashed a quick smile towards the person at the counter, choosing a table next to the window, something she wouldn’t usually do. Ah well, there was nobody around to recognize her anyway, so she was safe. A waitress came over and Katie ordered an iced tea. As the girl shuffled away, Katie leaned back, taking off her sunglasses and gazing sadly out of the window. She had so much excess energy today, and not even anybody to talk to. The aching feelings inside her – was this loneliness? She shook her head, muttering. ”I’m not lonely.” The man at the counter flashed her a funny look. Was she in denial? She shook her head again. Oh, yeah, maybe,
